We have a new program promoting the artwork of those who use our programs where they can share their gifts and perspectives with the wider community.

Anxiety & Depression:

Is something that I've been dealing with for majority of my life,
There have been times when I just wanted to end it with the use of a knife.
Even with there being an awareness about mental health,
Somehow still goes unspoken although it's known that humanity is broken.
Often wonder the reason for someone asking how another is doing,
When it seems that it doesn't matter, so... why bother pursuing?
Because it tends to get looked down upon,
When someone openly shares what's going on.
As people use labels associated with this person's stability,
Not realizing it is uncomfortable to show this kind of vulnerability.
Which only forces the person to return to a state of being depressed,
Due to being unable to openly express all that has been suppressed.
Anxiety tends to also be brought to the surface.
Which leaves the person questioning what to do,
As this person has nobody and/or nowhere to turn to.
What usually happens is that this person ends up falling through the cracks.
When there is supposed to be support offered within their community,
Instead this person has experienced more of a separation than of commonality.
How does humanity reverse this so that actual support is had?
Where the conversations that are happening aren't being viewed as 'bad'.
Because part of the human experience is the constant dealing of things,
Which is why it is important to have conversations about literally everything and anything.
So that one is able to release that energy so can be able to spread their wings.

Hungry Ghosts

A photo and spoken essay by Jacques Van Der Meer

In these unprecedented times of social isolation
there is an opportunity to explore real empathy
with an underclass of our society who have
always lived without significant social voices of their own.
While there is some fellowship amongst themselves
for most, their lives are unwitnessed by the mainstream.
Usually they come and go unnoticed.
These days, however, it may come more easily
for all of us to recognize the ghosts that live among us,
the times make their experience salient to us all.
Hungry Ghosts and their Haunts is a presentation
of images and narrative to represent and to evoke empathy for
the disenfranchised…those isolated in our midst.
